It's a bit of a minefield out there at the moment, unfortunately.

Do you have any skills? Not even necessarily specific ones like writing or coding - I'm thinking organisational, past secretarial experience etc. From friends that do VA work from home, there seems to be a bit of a surge in demand at the moment.

Are you signed up to things like Prolific Academic? I tend to dip in and out, but people that religiously do every single survey they're eligible for seem to earn upwards of £200 a month - a worthwhile chunk of money for a few minutes here and there.

I don't have any experience of Live Chat etc., but I know there are people here that do. It's probably worth contacting companies you'd like to work for directly, however. Those jobs tend not to be advertised, so it's worth asking about them.

Freelance sites are currently a race to the bottom, but again, if you have specific skills it's worth posting up Gigs/Offers (depending on which site you sign up for), stuffing them full of SEO so they feature higher in searches, and then going away and forgetting about them!

Good luck!

The starting point is to do a skills inventory of yourself - what saleable skills do you have and what saleable skills are you able/ prepared to acquire. These skills may have been acquired at work, through hobbies or simply day to day life. We can help suggest ways /sites to use to sell your skills.

I agree with Edible Mouse that £2,000+ per annum could be achievable, depending on your demographic. However, you will probably end up with a variety of of income streams some more reliable than others.

Have you searched for "remote" jobs on job sites like Indeed or, if you are in the UK https://www.gov.uk/find-a-job? If you can acquire paid permanent employment you are in a less precarious position and the 'side-gigs' mentioned here could be used to supplement, rather than replace your income.

The aftermath of the pandemic does seem to have impacted the number of microtasks out there - or maybe it is that many people signed up during the pandemic/quarantine(s) and there are more people for the jobs to be spread among. Are you familiar with the Jennifer Marie channel (which the lady running opened because she was fed up of disingenuous "clickbaity" channels making online jobs seem more profitable and easier than they were). https://www.youtube.com/@JenniferMarieVO/videos
She also covers subjects like writing proposals on Upwork/Linkedin/fiverr etc and has lately made suggestions as to how ChatGPT (and I suppose other chat software could be used) can be used to look for work and has covered things like selling printables on Etsy. Her printables were things like questions for bachelorette parties (are they what used to be called hen nights?).

I don't actually "do" reddit but I have a look at it from time to time but someone there was decent enough to put a link up to "beer money" sites in March though of course "beer money" is what it sounds like beermoneyuk/comments/11ivcgb Very small beer. I've signed up to a couple of get paid to sites - not enough to live on really but means I get a little money coming in. A couple of times my computer was infected with pop-up ads after I did microtasks on one such site (as I've mentioned on Moneyshed before) but I managed to remove them. The first time I inserted the b.eermoney link I got the whole post inserted here so I came back and edited it. It might be easier to just type in reddit/beermoneyuk

I don't know if there's anything there to tempt you but the workingmums site has an admin/secretarial and PA thread in its job listings. https://www.workingmums.co.uk/jobs/find/administration-secretarial-and-pa/homeworking/#browsing It has a sister site workingdads and also one for senior citizens though I couldn't find anything in the senior citizen one for myself when I looked. You could always look on other threads on the site if admin doesn't inspire you.
Thank you for this - I found a CV writing position; something I have extensive experience with!

This video is from a year ago but it mentions a site - well it may be an app - for teaching English to folk in Japan via, I think, text or it might be email. I don't know that it would be a big earner and I don't know what it's potential is in 2023 and it's something I've not used myself. I had thought I might look into it. I'm afraid it's still small money
Dormouse, I'm glad I could be of some use because I'm usually asking for assistance rather than vice versa. I was tempted by a couple of virtual assistant openings mentioned on the workingmums site (mentioned on the site - not working for workingmums) - but they sounded picky and the role of the secretary has changed somewhat since my retirement. I was a shorthand and audio typing girl and admittedly before I retired I was having to do some online work including online research but it was not the bulk of my work. So I didn't make any application. Now they want marketing skills and organising peoples' Pinterest boards and Instagram accounts.

Oops, seems like that video only plays in YouTube.

This is the link for the site itself https://blog.eigooo.com/en/Eigooo-Recruitment-20171108

As I say I haven't tried this out myself - not yet anyway. The site seems to work slowly. They have a grammar test and a typing test (I don't know why they would want folk to do a typing test but it's not my site).

I know the feeling - I have a bit of a foot in both camps, being early 50s; shorthand and audio here too, but I can organise social media accounts with the best of them!

I temped as an executive PA a couple of times (one absolutely charming and quite well-known person, one absolute weapon), but mostly went out purely as an audio typist in the days when everyone from architects to lawyers were crying out for that skills. Haven't temped in about 20 years now, however (and think I'm too old now - I noticed even in my mid-30s, agencies were REALLY wary of sending me out "because you're older than the managers"...).

Shorthand seems to be undergoing a bit of a renaissance - I've noticed a few requests here and there for "must have shorthand". I'm Teeline rather than Pitmans, but it's all much of a muchness.

I managed to get the princely sum of $1 US from Intellizoom yesterday - it's the first time I haven't been screened out of one of their shorter surveys. I didn't cut the mustard in the practice study for the longer studies but they have said I can re-take the test but I want to prepare myself before I do so. I'm older than Dormouse being in my 70s.

I'm going to bone up on social media platforms because they are the current ways of keeping in touch. In 2008 I was made redundant at the age of 59 and was sceptical about finding anything else. I did some part-time temp work (for two different ladies though the two jobs combined didn't equal one full-time job). But I eventually obtained a 23 month contract at a museum (data entry - transferring written records into Access). That was my last "proper" job before I retired. They liked me at interview for that job because I could read the specimen names reasonably well, being from the generation where we still did Latin at school. Some years ago I had an occasional (very occasional) shorthand minuting job but I had to travel for that and I don't want to have to go too far from home these days - not for work anyhow.

Before I hurt my back I was considering applying for a local delivery job I saw (leaflets - I may have mentioned it before). They said car owner preferred (not me) but not essential (so they would entertain people without a car) but since I jarred my lower back I'm not considering anything like that. I'm trying to put a couple of feelers out daily regarding part-time home-based work. After all, even if I get a/some rejection(s) I won't be any worse off than if I hadn't made the effort.

Somebody mentioned this the other day - I hadn't realised Appen had a British sub-website. It seems that they are looking for freelance transcribers - and for home-based directly employed transcribers though a number of their transcribers are employed on site in
Exeter. https://appen.com/uk/join-our-team/ They seem to be being quite picky - freelancers have to supply their own foot controls and headsets. I have both of those but they are in need of upgrading.

Crisp Thinking is still pretty viable, though I'm really not sure about what the waitlist time is like at the minute. If you have ANY foreign language skills you'll be higher on the waitlist though, I know that much. There's a thread on here about it, with a link to the application form/test, but feel free to drop me a message with any questions you might have if you don't want to post publicly, I've been with them 3 years now and bring in around £500 a month (would/could be more but I'm also chronically ill).

I've been sitting on the waitlist for nearly 18 months with a perfect test score AND language skills...I wish they would onboard me!

Me too been over 2 years, someone on another forum said she had recently been taken on so I am hoping they might be recruiting again but won't hold my breath!

Crossing everything. I have some ideas for offers to post on PPH/Fiverr etc. which circumvent the hit that ChatGPT is obviously having in the churn market, but I really, really need about an extra £500-£800 a month (don't we all?).

Let's hope we hear soon. Good luck with the PPH/Fiverr.

I can relate to your situation as I've also been on the hunt for remote work in the past. It's great that you're looking for ways to make money from home, and customer service roles can be a good option for remote work.
When I was in your shoes, I found a couple of alerts on this recruitment platform that led me to some tech recruiters. They were able to connect me with remote job opportunities, including customer service roles that involved emails, live chat, and other virtual interactions.
One platform that might be worth checking out is https://huntly.ai/. They have a range of job listings, and you might find something that fits your needs.

Hey, just took a look at that website you mentioned. I don't know if i'm just being a div but i can't find anywhere to sign up and look for jobs  All I can see are 2 options; one for posting a job vacancy and one for referring someone for a job.

Is it just as simple as signing up that I can see job vacancies for myself?

Thanks!

Mikesbush is a rather irritating bot that likes old posts, so I'd be surprised if you got a reply. I think he's related to MikeHunt...
